BOROUGH WORKS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —In lhe Times of Saturday last appear several letters which to some extent criticise my few remarks made at the Council table on Wednesday last. Believe me, sir, I did not speak with a view to shield anybody, or praise anybody; I simply stated my own opinion of what I saw. Evidently your correspondents are prepared to criticise tilings they have not seen. I did not say that all was well in the borough. My remarks were made entirely in reference to the sewage scheme, and with me sewage comes before roads. I am always ready to criticise anything I think is wrong, and I hope I will always he ready to give credit where credit is due; and, in passing, let me say it is always, easier to criticise than create. I hold no brief for the present Council or engineer, but I do like fair play, and I would remind your correspondents that I at least had the courage of my convictions and did not seek a nom de plume. I heartily agree that the roads and footpaths in the borough are in a very bad way, but I do not blame the engineer for that. Rather do I blame the reading policy of this and previous Councils, and I have yet to learn of any serious attempt which has ever been made to put down permanent roads to cope with the large motor traffic of this district. I have criticised the roading policy at open Council, and my remarks have been duly reported in the columns of the Waikato Times. Then, to be fair, “Wary and Co.” should place one against the other before arriving at a decision. Let me say in conclusion, sir, that I do not intend to carry on a correspondence on die subject, for candidly I do not nke .replying to people who snipe from ambush. —I am, etc., A. J. DENZ.
