HEAVY DEATH-ROLL FEARED. (Australian and. N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, September 5. Eighteen dead bodies have already been brought' to the surface, and the rest of the men are entopnbed behind the fallen material which blocks the drive. Rescue parties - are hampered by poisonous gas. Grief-stricken wives and mothers of the. entombed men are awaiting news at. the pithead. The victims include ■ a father and his two sens, also a mining student named Fell, son of the Vicar of Whitehaven, who had descended the pit for the first time. Heavy loss of life is feared, though there is just a hope that some of the entombed men may have escaped through a drift into an adjoining pit with which the Whitehaven mine is connected.
