They admit that they have been compelled to evacuate Asia Minor. ANATOLIAN BATTLE. TURKISH CLAIMS. GREEK ARMY BROKEN. (Reuter's Telegrams.) PARIS, September 3. Summing up the results of the battle in Analolla, a communique issued from Angara claims that the Turkish offensive in the Aflum Karahissar sector, after being pressed without interruption for five days, ended ! in the defeat of the bulk of the Greek army, which is split in two. The Northern army was completely destroyed and dispersed, while th 3 Southern suffered severe set-backs and is retreating toward Ushaki Large quantities of war material and 150 guns were captured. The communique adds that Kutayah, between Ahum Karahissar an*d Eskishehr, has been cccupied by the Turks. TURKISH VICTORIES. TANKS IN OPERATION. ADVANCE ON BRUSA. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received September 5. 12.25 p.m. LONDON, September' 4. The Evening Standard states that Britain has been approached by the Allies, with the object of bringing about an armistice between the Greeks and Turks. The cruiser Iron Duke has been sent to Smyrna in order y to .protect British interests, and ensure the safely of refugees. M. Venizelos is considering ah invitation to return to Athens. The Greek Government is faced with a critical situation. PARIS, September 1. A message from Athens states that the f Greek press announce that the Kemalists havfe taken Ushaka after 48 hours' fighting. Tanks were employed for the first time, the Turks using seven, and also many batteries of French seventy-fives. The occupation of Brusa is imminent. GREEK COMMUNIQUE. MASSACRE OF ALIENS. IN THE EVACUATED AREAS. (Australians and N.Z. Cable Assn.) \ ATHENS, September 4. A communique claims that the military situation has materially improved. Contact with the different units of the Greek army' has been effected' on the whole front, and the retreat continues without enemy pressure. Massacres of the non-Turkish elements are now taking place in those areas evacuated by the Greeks. MOSLEM FEELING EXCITED. PLOTS TO RESTORE EMPIRE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, Sept.' 3. The Weekly Despatch says that in view of the developments in Asia Minor the Government is now anxious to expedite the Near East conference. The Turkish Nationalist victories in Anatolia are sure to encourage the extremists, who are plotting to restore the old Turkish Empire,' including "Mesopotamia and Palestine, where Moslem sentiment is greatly inflamed. They are also likely to react on Moslem feeling in India. There have been further collisions between the Zionists and Arabs in Palestine, where the situation is troubled. The menaoing situation in Irak is disquieting. The Government's policy is to rely on air defence, but it is reported that Major-General Sir Percy Cox, the High Commissioner, has requested troops.
