The somewhat stagnant conditions which have existed locally for some considerable time past (says the Gisborne Times) would at last seem to be giving way to a period of enterprise, and the public generally seems to be looking forward to more active progress than there has been during the past two years. The most noticeable feature of this new activity is the altered conditions of the building industry, which is better now than has been the case for many months. Several firms and individuals who have apparently been holding off seem now to be imbued witli an optimism which has been lacking in the past, and, as a result, building operations arc becoming more extensive. It is stated that there is hardly a carpenter in Gisborne who is out of employment, and this fact speaks for itself, being, as it is, one of the surest indications of conditions in that particular trade.
