HOCKEY.

THE AUSTRALIAN VISIT. (By “Left Half.”) Matters in connection with the visit of the Australian representative team, are well in hand, and much interest is being evidenced in the contest between the visitors and the Waikato representatives. The visiting combination will be a very solid one, and should, be in great form, as the New South Wales championship week concluded immediately prior to their departure. Several members of the team were noted in this week’s Referee for fine work, Seaman, of the forward line especially coming in for praise. In ’the trial match, N.S.W. Reps. v. ■ The Rest, the former won 6 —o, Seaman, being the scorer on five occasions. He is a fine type of player.,.. The local association lias arranged a civic reception to the team, which is, by the way, the first international hockey combination to visit these shores. On the evening of the matcii the visitors will be the guests of the Waikato Hockey Association at its annual ball in Alexandra Hall. Given a fine day, the game should be a splehdid exhibition of hockey, the local team being ’a particularly good combination. They are in steady training, and with the judicious coaching they are receiving, should uphold the honour of Waikato.

JOTTINGS. . Last, week’s seven-a-side tourney produced a line afternoon’s sport, in winning tile men’s section United retained their hold on the Shield. It was thought that the Hamilton Club seven, having the bye in the best round, would be able to carry off the trophy, but United played very strongly and gave the greens few scoring chances. Fill’s winning goal was a fine shot. The ladies’ games were most interesting, and speedy contests were' tile order. High School B had a meritorious win against Old Girls A, and eventually succeeded in winning the final. The New Zealand Ladies’ Championship Tourney is in progress at Napier. It finishes to-day. With the material we have here, it is a pity .Waikato is not represented at the championships. The visit on Tuesday last of the Auckland Grammar A and B teams provided some good hockey. The A game resulted in a draw —High School A 2, Grammar A 2. The game throughout was most exciting, and full of incident. Play was. generally individualistic in nature, neither side developing combined work, chances thus being missed. In the contest between the B teams some excellent hockey was played. The High School team .combined splendidly, and played superior hockey, outclassing their opponents, Grammar B, in the general run of play. Towards the end of the game Grammar got down to business in a more finished manner, but could not increase their score, the final result being 4 —l in School B’s favour. Messrs Fabling and Hunter controlled the games.

The Auckland louring team was defeated by Hawke’s Bay, at Napier, on Wednesday, for the New Zealand Challenge Shield,, the final score reading 6 — 5, after the finest exhibition of the slick game seen for some considerable time. Both teams made the pace a ‘cracker,” the losers showing more finished hockey. The winners were a very fast team, and their play more individual in character. N. R. Jacobsen, ex-Hamiltonian, represented Hawke’s Bay, and scored the winning goal. The Auckland tourists are not Ihe strongest team (he Association could place in the field, several of their first selection being unable to make Hie tour.
