PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Piako CounLy Council's engineer (Mr \V. J. Gibbs) reported for the month as follows: llarbollle's Road drain has now been cleaned out for 22 chains along roadside. Some metal repairs have been carried out to the road; metal broken and knapped from llinton's Pit. Ilangawcra and Tahuna Roads: A small section of these roads was graded up. Together with Cr. Glynn I inspected the Woodlands Drainage Board drain near Motumaoho Station, and hod the work well done. Main road, near Motumaoho cheese factory, is in a very bad stale, and requires some sanding or shingling. Morrinsville-Kiwitahi Road: Some repairs with shingle have been carried out, also about six chains constructed on this road. Slarkey's Road metalling: A total of 500 cubic yards is now knapped, ready for carting in dry weather. Piakoiti Valley drain: A "small contract was let for deepening and widening out an old cut to get flood walcr away. A loan should be raised, and considerable straightening carried out in various portions of this drain. Railway level crossing at Walton: The District Engineer of Railways has been written to re this. Walton East Roads Loan: Sufficient moneys are not available to carry out all the roads in the area. Wardville Road metalling: About 15 chains were completed, and considerable maintenance work carried out; also about six chains of Stanley Road was metalled. Tenders are being called for formation of about 30 chains, and the tractor and grader is in use widening and forming portions Of this road. The Gordon crusher is now working well, and up to 112 cubic yards per day is being crushed. The wiring is not yet completed for a supplv of power for this plant. Te Aroha Creek bridge: This bridge is now in a bad state. I have ordered limber for temporary repairs, but. a new concrete structure is required as soon as possible. Concrete in this case is more economical than timber. Te Aroha-Gurdon: Some grading and scooping has been carried out, also portion of Southie's Road graded up. Owing to the Wardville Road work being very urgent, I shifted the grader plant on to If, and will have the Te Aroha Riding roads completed later on. Alexander Road metalling: Very little work was done on this road during the month. I am yet unable to get the subsidy for the work. Waiorongomai Quarry: Clean stone is now being crushed for concrete work; a sample has been forwarded to the Public Works Department, Auckland. To eel the best results,' a slight alteration is required to the screen, so that same can be run at a slower speed. About 140,000 yards of stripping is required lo be done during wet weather, and a further section of head race cleaned out to provide for power during dry weather. Gassidy'S drain culvert: The contract for erecting this culvert has been commenced. A 12 x 10 hut was erected at Manawaru for holding harness, lools, feed, etc Stanley Road concreting: About IS chains of concrete was placed, ami a further seclion opened for traffic. Repairs worn 'carried mil In Diagonal, Waitoa, MafaI mala, SVaioronjioniai - Maungakawa, MeCabe's and Nlickelson's Roads: a I small contract for formation on the Waiorongomai-Maungakawa Road was complete; there is still a further sum to lie expended. Wiseman's Road metalling: About lo chains was completed. Wakahora drain: The hands Drainage Department Engineer, Mr Taylor, lhe Waitoa Drainage Hoard's engineer, and myself met and discussed ways and means of handling tile Hood waters from this drain, hut an agreement could nut lie reached willi lhe Lands Department Engineer. Thames Valley Drainage Reference I Board: During the month I made one j trip up a portion of the Walhou River in company with Hie Public Works Engineers and members of the Hoard. The report was adopted.
