FIRED UPON POLICE

A MAORI ESCAPEE

By Telegraph.—Press Association WANGAN LT, Tuesday.

At the Supreme Court to-day, Joe Kauriri, a sturdily built Maori, was charged with escaping from custody and discharging a rifle at the police who endeavoured to arrest him. Kauriri was the central figure in the recent exploit near Raetihi. Kauriri gave evidence, and said lie did not want to shoot the police, but merely to frighten them, so that he could escape. Accused was found guilty.

Mr Justice Reed sentenced him to five years' imprisonment, and declared him an habitual criminal.
