HUNGAHUNGA DRAINAGE

MEETING OF THE BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Hungahunga Drainage Board took place at,Te Aroha on Saturday. Present were Messrs L. E. Hughes (chairman) and J. Orr, J. Pohlen, W. N. Mathers and F. C. Hausen. A letter from a ratepayer who had forwarded his cheque for rates, protested as follows: — "You are making things a bit hot on a small holding of 120 acres; what with drainage rates, council rates, land and income tax, and mortgage, a man has not enough left to pay for his tucker or buy a pair of socks." Messrs Cole and Candy complained that they were rated unfarrly and practicallyan increase of three times since last year. The land is classified 25GA acres A land, when only about 100 acres is in that classification, and about 100 acres B. It was agreed to write that as no objection was laid at the S.M. Court when their farm was classified, therfore such classification must stand until a fresh one is made. Mr G. J. Duxfleld, Matamata, wrote protesting against paying rates to the Hungahunga Drainage Board (1) because the drain does not benefit him in the least, the drain having the level it had 20 years ago; (2) when he signed the petition, it was on the understanding that the drain was lowered into his property; (3) he understood the drain had only been deepened up to 3 of a mile away, and the Board decided as no objection was laid at the S.M. Court when the classification was made, such classification must stand.
