THE ARBUCKLE TRIAL
JURY OUT FOR 20 HOURS
THREAT OF ASSASSINATION. IF ACCUSED IS ACQUITTED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.') Received December 4, 5.5 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, December 3. The Arbuckle case went to the jury at 4.15. The jury has been locked up. Arbuckle displayed nervousness during the closing hours of counsels' argument, making innumerable paper balls. The jury has been out for 20 hours, and is still undecided. Mr Gavin McNab, Arbuckle's chief counsel, concluded his argument by arraigning the State for failing to bring out any definite detailed statement of Miss Rappe explaining the injury; also for failure to call Mrs Delmont, who lodged the complaint. Arbuckle's attorney revealed that tb.6 comedian received threats to assassinate him if ho is acquitted.
JURY FAIL TO AGREE. AFTER 24 HOURS' DELIBERATION. (Australian and N\Z. Cable Assn.) Received December 4, 9.5 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, December 3. After 24 hours' deliberation in the Arbuckle case the jury were unable to agree on a verdict. The prosecution has announced its intention to ask Judge Louderback to dismiss the jury, while the defence declared they would resist the attempt. Mr McNab said: "I want them to deliberate until they reach a verdict. Various reports are current in regard to the jury's delay—namely, one woman juror insists on conviction; other reports state that the jury is divided into ten to two and a seven to five majority, in each case resisting an acquittal.
