ST. PAUL'S CHURCH

EXTENSION TO SUNDAY SCHOOL.

Yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large crowd of -children, parents and friends, the new infant room which has been erected in connection with St. Paul's Methodist Sunday School, at a cost of £550, was officially opened. The ceremony proved interesting and enjoyable^ The building, which has been erected on the plan and under the supervision of-Mr G. Densem, has been specially designed to suit the requirements of infant tuition, and also the needs, with respect to numbers,- not only of the present, but of the future, giving seating accommodation for approximately 150 children. The school measures 35ft'in length by 25ft in breadth, and in addition has an en- ' trance porch 10ft wide, with double doors, opening outwards. The building is bungalow in design, and the interior gives a pleasing and artistic effect. The floor has a gradual rise of lft in 17ft, running the full length of the building, giving an uninterrupted view from any angle of the lessons demonstrated. The interior walls are high, with a raised ceiling, and are finished off with a rimu dado 7ft high, capped with a shelf running round the interior. Above this is a battened wall to the ceiling, both walls and ceiling being finished in white, the darker battens making a pleasing contrast. Specially large windows give plenty of light, and with oeiling vents and louvres, give perfect ventilation. A cupboard, with double doors, and fitted with ample shelf room, sand-table, blackboards, etc., all made accessible and easily manipulated, is situated on the lower side of the room where the demonstrations are carried out. A staff of 11 teachers and helpers will be in attendance every Sunday to cope with the primary work. The superintendent of the Sunday School, Mr J. Treloar, has special charge of the teacher-training work in this connection, and the system followed \ia largely that of English Sunday schools with Archibald methods, placing special emphasis on the importance 'of the sense of touch and expression work by the infants them-: ■ selves.
