THE MEAT SLUMP

SUGGESTED REMEDY. SUBSIDISING THE PRODUCER. The recent cabled suggestion of Mr W. M. Hughes, Premier of Australia, that the Imperial, Australian and New Zealand Governments should subsidise the meat producers until the market became more stable, was mentioned by Mr Bisley al a meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr Bisley said it was well known that the cause of the present slump was the accumulated stock in Imperial stores. The people on the Continent were starving for this produce, hut had no money to pay for it. If the three Governments mentioned could finance the farmers until these countries were able to pay, and sell the produce on the European markets, they would relieve Hie glut, get good prices, and stabilise the market. The New Zealand Government might even find it necessary to raise a loan for the purpose and buy back the Imperial stocks. Mr G. Parr (president) did not think the Government would entertain the question of any further subsidies. In any case it would be folly to purchase back the Imperial stocks, much of which was probably meal unfit for consumption. Mr Whyte said the only remedy Tor the present state of tilings and to stabilise the market was for the farmers to handle their produce Hie whole way —at both ends and to have their own transport. No action was taken in the matter.
