CHRISTMAS VACATIONS

SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY. SHOP ASSISTANTS’ VIEW. The South Auckland Grocers’ Assistants’ Union are opposed to any infringement of tiro Saturday half-holiday during Christmas and New Year week (bolh Christmas and New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday). At a meeting of the Union, recently, a resolution was carried to this effect, it being unanimously agreed that the late night should be’on Friday of each week, and that the shops should close as usual on each Saturday, at 1 p.m. A copy of the resolution was forwarded to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last night, when Mr J. Hodd moved that the letter be received. He did not think that Hie chamber should lake a suggeslion from Hie Assistants’ Union as to what it should do in this matter. The-letter was received, the meeting considering the matter should be referred to a conference of business interests.
