Martin, of Roto-o-Rangi, driver of (he vehicle and pair, was leaving for homo —the horses having been standing in a yard at Hie rear of Messrs Clark and Sons’ business premises for a while — and, before getting into the waggon, ■be loosened the brake, whereupon the horses suddenly made off without Hie driver. The pair found their way through an alleyway between Messrs Turnbull and Jones’ and Mr Swncy’s,>. and after crossing Duke Street one wheel of Hie waggon was knocked off through corning into contact with a varandah post of 51 r While’s shop. Continuing their mad career Ihc animals came to grief at the Fort Street corner, where they had endeavoured to negotiate a, sharp turning, capsizing and badly smashing the vehicle, but ending the holt.
