LEAGUE FOOTBALL

WIND-UP OF SEASON. AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION. One of the most enjoyable evenings ever held in Hamilton, under the ausptie-es of the Hamilton Rugby League, took place on Saturday evening in Toorak Chambers, when about '2OO players and supporters were present. Everything went with a swing from start to finish. Mr R. 11. Wood occupied the chair, and proposed the toast of "The Hamilton Rugby League." He congratulated the League on the success attained this season, and was sure the prominence was the forerunner of future success. Mr 11. Lorrimcr (Cambridge) replied, and said that League had come to stay, and that thd game bad made rapid strides in Hamilton. "The v fsitors" was propose Iby Mr St,. Clair McDonald, who extended to them i iie.i'ty welcame. He said the game was only in its introductory stages in this part of the Dominion, and he was satisfied the result had proved thai it was a popular sport. The toast was honoured enthusiastically. Mr Melntyre proposed the toast of "The Oity Rovers," winners of the championship for the season, and congratulated the team on the, success attained. He also made reference to the fact that the opposing teams had put up a keen fight. Mr Manning replied on behalf of the winners, and thanked the League for the courtesy shown the players during tch season. Mr R. Grigg, ns president of (tie winning club, endorsed the remarks of Iho previous speaker. The chairman asked the captain of the City Rovers to accept the handsome 0. L. Inncs shield, and in stepping forward he was loudly applauded. A number of medals were also presented, the first being to Mr .1. Clarkin for the best conducted player on and off the field. Mr Smith received one for the most improved player during the season. Mr S. Ncili was the recipient of fi medal for the most improved forward. Mr Davcy also received a medal from the suportcrs of the Athletic Club. The Franklon Albions, as Ihe winners of the knock-out competition, received the silver bull-do.--, which was presented by Mr It. Grigg. Mr .1. Dully, replying, thanked the committee for | the enthusiasm shown by the committee during the season. Other presentations made during Hie evening were to Mr McDormott, a travelling bag, for his good work as selector during the season, and lo Mr R. Blackie a case of pipes for his work as a first aid man. "The Press" was proposed by Mr St. Clair McDonald, and replied to by the representative present. During the evening complimentary references were made to Mr J. Dowley for the services he had rendered to the League game prior to his departure for Australia. Musical items were contributed during the evening, and a pleasant function was brought to a close with thu singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
