JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA
NORTHCLIFFfi'S WARNING NOT LIGHTLY REGARDED. JAPAN'S FOREIGN OFFICE AROUSED. (Australian and X.Z. Cable Assn.) Received October li. 5.5 p.m. TOKIO, October 12. Cord Northeliffe's statement, as cabled to the London Times on October ■'!, in which he was quoted as warning Australia of the danger to its uno3cupied areas from a northern power, has aroused the Japanese Foreign Office.
In its behalf Baron Ijuin stated that ' perhaps it is improper to express an 2 ! opinion without, reading the complete I text of Lord Northclifi'e's statement. j ! Although hi*-.studiously, and seemingly ! cautiously, avoided direct reference to Japan, the general tone indicates that " he tried lo picture Japan as a menace In Australia. If by the teeming millions that be fears would overwhelm Australian Anglo-Saxons he means the Japanese, if by an ambitious and covetous power which some day might became Australia's enemy he means Japan, such statements coming from a person of Lord Northcliffe's influence must not be passed over lightly. Goort- . will and a friendly spirit on Japan's part towards Australia have been cultivated under the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, and there is no room for the alienation of this spirit. Japan has never looked towards Australia as a 1 possible outlet, for her surplus popula- •" tion- Japan realises the importance ' ! of maintaining a good relationship with 1 • Australia for the peace of the Pacific., 1 ; for which Japan has not spared anv 1 | effort.
