Mr A. J. Burrows, of Tc Aroha, was a visitor to Hamilton to-day.

Mr .1. O’Donovan, the Police Commissioner, will retire early next year, after -52 years’ service in the force. Mr F. W. Wallers, chairman of the Piako County Council, was in Hamilton to-day. Mr J. Sweeney, of Dunedin, and brother-in-law of Mr R. P. Connell, of this town, is in Hamilton.

Mr R. G. Guy has taken up his duties as manager of the Bank of New South Wales, in Hamilton, in succession to Mr P. G. Garnham.

Rev. H. G. Hercus left Hamilton on Sunday night to attend the annual co'nfcrcnec of the New Zealand Baptist Union and Missionary Society. His Honor, Mr Justice Stringer, arrived in Hamilton to-day, and jvill preside over the adjourned sitting of the Supreme Court in the morning. The many friends of Mr W. c'RoTlett will regret to hear that he will be confined to his residence for a few days, owing to being knocked down by a cyclist yesterday. The Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones, M.L.G., returned to New Zealand by the Maheno on Sunday. He was accompanied by Lady Hall-Jones and Miss Hall-Jones.

Dr. Todd has been appointed to the Chair of Latin at the University of Sydney in succession to Professor Butler, who retired, and Mr Bernard Muscio has been appointed to Ihe Chair of Philosophy, in succession to Dr. Anderson. —Sydney cable.

Private advice has been received in Wellington to the effect that Sir Joseph Ward left London on Wednesday last on route to Now Zealand, and that ho will arrive in the Dominion some time next month. It is Sir Joseph Ward’s intention to travel by way of America.

Mr W. T. Goodwin has Been appointed to the position of 'issistjntdircctor of horticulture in the Agricultural Department. Mr Goodwin is at present orchard inspector at Mopieku, and was formerly stationed in Central Otago. Mr Goodwin has had a number of years’ experience in Tasmania, and was actively engaged there as an expert when the New Zealand Government secured his services.
