MADE IN NEW ZEALAND
SUPPORT FOR LOCAL INDUSTRIES. From time to time in the past members of Parliament and members of (he Government had advocated the encouragement of local industries by the purchasers insisting upon receiving New Zealand made goods. It is a mistake to consider that New Zealand manufactures arc inferior to articles imported. A demonstration of the excellent quality of New Zealand manufactures was given at, the Panama Pacific Exposition. San Francisco, in 1013. wtien New Zealand made woollen goods were awarded the world's grand prize. If anything, improvement in the manufacture of such woollen goods has been made since, and a worldwide reputation has been established for 'TiT,ny classes of woollens. It was slated to a New Zealand Times reporter that whilst the need has been urged for foslcrin : a demand for the many goods made in this country, it has been found that occasionally Government departments themselves were in some instances —by mere force of habit —giving preference to imported sroods, when equally satisfactory goods could Le made in New Zealand/ It is now, however, reported that, as a result of the active interest taken by the Hon. E. P. Lee in connection with the industrial development of the Dominion, Government departments are now stipulating that locallymanufactured articles should be supplied for Government use where these can be purchased of a quality and at a price competitive with the imported goods.
