UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM
THE POSITION CONSIDERED PROVINCIAL MAYORS MEET. PROPOSALS SUBMITTED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received Sept. .'(0. 5-5 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 20. The Lord-Mayors of the provincial cities met. in London and discussed unemployment. They decided to interview Sir A. Mond and make the following proposals: — 1. Instead of State assistance to the local authorities as published, the Government be urged to adopt grants equal to 75 per cent, of the interest and sinking fund in respect to all approved loans raised by local authorities, the latter having discretion with respect to Ihe rale of wages. 2. That the Government be urged to make a State contribution toward the expenditure of the boards of guardians where unemployment largely exceeds normal, thus relieving the existing unfair charge on local ratesThe conference welcomed the Government's proposal to deal with relief schemes with the utmost despatch, and their efforts towards the restoration of national trade. CONFERENCE OF EXPERTS. DIFFICULTY OF RESTORING TRADE. DUE TO DEPRECIATED EXCHANGE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received September 30, 8.20 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 30. . The financial and industrial experts who have, been invited to Gairloch include Sir J. H. Simpson. Sir Allan Smith, Mr W- L. Ilickens, '-and Mr W. T. Laylon. In the meanwh'ile the Cabinet Commit tee is considering the possibility of extending the export credit scheme to South America and the Far Easl. It is pointed out that a difficulty barring the re-establishment of trade, is that 75 per cent, of the British pre-war trade was with countries whose exchanges have now depreciated.
