WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD

J MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs J. P. Bailey (chairman), Campbell Johnstone. ,1, B. Teasdale, J. J. Ryburn. H. E. Tristram, W. Blaokman, A. G. Dent, R. Seavill, V. Potts, T. Hinton. C. .1. \V. Barton, G. Dickinson, and \V. Hill. Rotorua's Needs. The Department of Health, writing with reference tn the closing of the cottage hospital at Rotorna, noted that the Board would continue to pay the yearly contribution previously agreed on, viz., £2OO. . Full information with reference to the number of patients from the Rotorna district being treated in future at King George V. Military Hospital would be furnished each halfyearly period. The Department of Health advised that it was referring the matter of East Taupo and Rotorna Counties to the Hawke's Bay Board, and would advise the Waikato Board of the result. The Te Kuitl Site. The Minister of Health consented to the sale of the Board of section 4, block IS (Te Kuiti), an area of 3 acres, 1 rood i 5 poles. The Te Kuiti Borough Council forwarded a copy of the agreement setting out the conditions in connection with the purchase of 13 acres for a hospital site. From the terms of the agreement the second £SOO retained by the Board should, it was stated, be paid to the land-owners, and the balance retained by the Council until the title was ready. The secretary was instructed to make the payment. The Board's Loan. The Minister of Health advised of his approval to the Board taking preliminary steps in connection with the raising of a loan of £50,000. The Hanmer Hospital. The director Division of Hospitals (Dr. D. S. Wylie) advised the Board of the provision of facilities at the military hospital at Hanmer for the treatment of civilian patients (men only at present) suffering from neurasthenia, phychasthenia, etc. The cost of treatment is Gs per day. The Flat-rate of Subsidy. The Parawera Road Board advised that it supported the Raglan County resolution for a flat rate of £ for £ subsidy paid by the Government to the boards. Kawhia County Council also supported the resolution, and one from the Waipa County Council advocating the levy of hospital boards being made on a population basis. The Piako County Council advised that at its July meeting it had discussed the findings of the Royal Commission on hospitals, more esp'ecially relating to subsidies on hospital maintenance. The Council would be pleased to hear the Board's views on the matter and what action, if any, the Board considered should be taken before a new Bill was placed before Parliament. The secretary, discussing the population basis of levy, said it would be of no benefit to the boards. A member: Hamilton would then pay all. (Laughter.) The communications will be forwarded 'to the Raglan County"' Council. Mr Johnstone stated that practically all the replies were in, and the meeting would be called shortly to discuss the whole of these subjects. Pukemiro Medical Needs. The District Health Office assistant inspector enquired if the Board intended appointing another district nurse for Pukemiro. The Director-General (Dr.Valintine) advised that money paid by the Pukemiro Medical Society to the Board on condition that the contributors should be granted free treatment could not carry the usual subsidy of 24s in the £, as it was in the nature of patients' payments. The Board might consider to what extent free treatment or treatment at reduced rates should be given to the members of the Society. It might be advisable to treat the Society on the same lines as a Friendly Society, and to make an arrangement to afford treatment at a reduced rate of, say 30s per week, is guaranteed by the Medical Society. If the residence was handed over to the Board and the Board accepted it, the value of such donation would be subsidisable at 24s in the £. The Board considered that the Pukemiro needs were such as warranted special consideration, and it was resolved to again make request to the Department and ask it to reconsider its decision on these special grounds. Land Matters. Mr H. C. M. Norris, solicitor, forwarded for the consent of the Board a transfer of lot 1 of allotment 150, Hamilton West, from William Lett to Harold William Lett. : —Consent given. In reporting upon Lot 139 a, Hamilton West, the secretary reported that Mr L. E.-Brown, the present lessee, wished to cut off the south end of the section, containing 'approximately 1 rood 23 perches, and transfer it to the Pearson Soap Company. The lessee also wished to surrender the present lease and obtain two new leases for the unexpired term, to April 30, 1924, under "The Public Bodies Loans Act, 1908." The secretary reported favourably on the matter.—-Approved.' Mr R. Paddon applied to have* the sections leased by him in Ulster street, viz., 1,2 and 3, subdivision of part 17 9, converted into Glasgow leases and to have the rent of each separately apportioned.—Referred to the secretary for report.
