A meeting will be held in the Public Library room on. Monday next, at 7.45 p.m., to consider the resuscitation of the Hamilton Horticultural Society. The Soutli Auckland championships, also the Walkato Cadet championships, arc to be decided, and as the entries number 53, a good evening’s boxing is assured. The members of the Hamilton East Methodist Choir journeyed to Rototuna last night, and gave a fine programme of concerted and soio items, recitations, etc. Despite the roughness of the weather there was a fairly large audience, and the concert was much enjoyed.

A voluntary course of instruction for officers and non-commissioned officers of the territorial and senior cadet forces will he commenced at Narrow Neck on Monday. The course will he a comprehensive one, covering all branches of military activities. Examinations, at which those attending the course will sit to qualify for promotion ..will be held at Auckland, Hamilton and Whangarei in about a fortnight’s time. A meeting of the Hamilton Operatic Society was held in Toorak Chambers Is.sbnight, there being a fair attendance despite the unpropitious weather. Mr S. Tombs occupied the chair. The following officers were elected pro tem; — Conductor, Mr S. Tombs; stage manager, Mr Norman Day; assistant stage manager, Mr \V. J. H. Reynolds; bon. secretary, Mr P. W. Haddock. A committee consisting of Messrs S. Tombs, A. E. Manning, W. J. H. Reynolds, N. Day and A. H. Wilde was set up to select the opera for next production. This committee will meet shortly, and immediately the opera is chosen rehearsals will commence.

Mr T. S. Hickey, proprietor of the Opunake Times, was the victim of an assault recently, that was as unwarranted as it was unexpected, by a resident of the district to whom Air Hickey had shown a good deal of friendly consideration- Without any warning, and with no provocation, the man entered Mr Hickey’s office and attacked him, Ihe latter at once closing with his assailant and calling for help. Fortunately assistance was close at hand, and the aggressor was secured until the, arrival of the, police constable who had been telephoned for by others in the office when the assault was made. When Constable Clouston arrived he at once placed tlie man under arrest. The man was subsequently taken to New Plymouth, -od after being examined by two medical men was committed to a mental hospital. A lecture entitled “A Trip round the World in Sixty Minutes” was delivered by Rev. E. O. Blamires in the Hamilton East Methodist Schoolroom on Wednesday night. Despite the unpropitious weather, there was a good attendance. Rev. B. T. Olds presided. Mr Blamires held the attenlion of the audience closely throughout with incidents of ids recent tour of Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, France and America, and gave some interesting information on the conditions prevailing in those countries. Incidentally he staled that ho had made a special' study of the effects of prohibition in America, and found that the new law was a great success. At the close of his entertaining and instructive lecture Mr Blamires wag accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A general meeting of the Hamilton Queen Carnival Committee took place last evening. Mrs A. W. Green was nominated as the Rugby Queen. Mrs Ross us Band Queen, and Mrs Brcwis as the Tennis Queen. The matter of organisers was left over till the next executive meeting. After some discussion it was decided that the price o( votes be 3d each. The following executive was elected Messrs H. G. Ross, W. Gann and Lowry; Fabling, Kay and Cox; Walshe, Binnio.and Tooiran.

A meeting of the executive committee of the Waikato Winter Show Association was held yesterday. There wore present: Messrs .T. E. 'field (in the chair), Mitchell, Sing, Binnie, Hosmvcll, Currie, McKee, Lemon. Fow, Snell, and Bolictl. A draft, of the conditions in connection with Mr Frank M. Winstonc’s Gold Cup was approved. The secretary submitted a statement showing the estimated receipts and expenditure. The secretary was authorised to pay accounts subject to the approval of the Finance Committee. It was decided to have a report of outstanding members brought down at next meeting in order to enable the executive to set up a committee to deal with same.
