WILFULLY SCUTTLED
BRITISH STEAMER SUNK. CHIEF ENGINEER ACCUSED. HIS CERTIFICATE CANCELLED. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received August 4, 1.20 a.m. LONDON, August 3. The Beard of Trade inquiry into the sinking of the British steamer Spathari off the Portuguese coast on April 19, found that the chief engineer, Thomas Malley, wilfully scuttled the ship by opening the sea communications with the engine room, after which the officers did not try to ascertain the cause of the leak, and prematurely abandoned the vessel. Malley's certificate was cancelled and the master's suspended for three months. There 'was no proof that the owner was Inculpated.
