AN IMPROMPTU GATHERING. WREATHS FROM AUSTRALIA. PLACED OX GRAVE AND CENOTAPH. Received July 29, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, July 28. The fact that a wreath arrived from Australia in ice so fired their imagination that a large crowd at Weslminster Abbey watched Mr Hughes, accompanied by Sir J. 15. Connolly, (lie Agent-Gene-ral, place the West Australian soldiers' wreath on the unknown soldier's grave. The Dean of Westminster referred to the valour of the Australians, and expressed England's gratitude for this act performed on behalf of (he Australian people. lie described Mi'Hughes as the greatest man the Commonwealth had produced.
.Mr nughes was evidently taken by surprise at having to make a speech on such an occasion, and he spoke labouredly. He alluded In the Anzacs' achievements and said his acl in placing a wreath annihilated the distance separating l.he Motherland and Australia. Subsequently Mr Hughes placed another Perth wreath on the cenotaph. Tin l frozen wrealhs have not proved altogether satisfactory and were partially restored here.
