As expressed by correspondents, whose letters are welcome, but for whose views we have ne -oenonslhiUty. ACCOMMODATION FOR VISITORS. (To the Editor.) i Sir, —Am I right In thinking that one of the responsibilities of the licensed victuallers, along with their privileges, Is to supply the necessary accommodation for visitors? if my view is right may 1 ask who is responsible to see they do their part? Throughout the length and breadth of the Dominion the poorness of our accommodation is a byeword, and 1 am convinced I fiat in a, year thousands of visitors pass us because they may not slay. Then, in the town itself there are many who cannot get I lie quarters they need owing to the general shortage, and to ask a business, associate to come here and stay a day or so means that it is doubtful if one can get him a bed. I am informed that the Insecurity of the licensing position is the excuse made by the hotelkeepers, but, apart from small additions to one hotel, I am unable, to remember any extensions to the bedroom accommodation in the Hamilton hotels In 10 years. Is this a fair tldng nr a reasonable when the town has about trebled its population? From a commercial standpoint I believe Ibis matter to b.c one of our greatest obstacles to progress, and let the people who ’have made fortunes out of liquor do their part and give us the quid pro quo we are entitled to in reasonable hotel accommodation.—l am, etc., » PROGRESS. Hamilton, June 3, 1921. LIGHT RAILWAYS. (To the Editor.) Sir, —It was with pleasure I read in your issue of yesterday that The Wai-kato-West Coast Light Railway Board had received word that an Australian (Irm was ready to construct a light railway from Hamilton to Raglan and Kawhla immediately the contract was approved, and that tire board hoped to start with the building of the proposed railway early in the spring. Seemingly Land others whom I have enquired of have missed some important steps in the development of the proposal, for we were not aware that such substantial progress had been made. In order to • clear up any misunderstanding which may possibly lead to*ultimate disappointment on the part of those who will require to find the cash or security for the payment of the proposed works, we would thank you to supply the ratepayers through the medium ’of your widely-circulated journal with information on the following points:—l. When was the-Waikato-Wcst Coast Light, Railway Board constituted and the authority given by the Government for holding - the first election of members?* 2. What, roughly, are the districts comprising the light railway district which will be liable for rating under the board? 3. Who are Ibe members of the board, where are (he meetings held, and where Is the office of the board located? 4. When was the poll of the. ratepayers taken to raise the loan requisite to pay for the building .and equipment of the railway, and what was the amount of the l(/an? —I am, etc., 5, WAIPA. Whatawhata, June 3. 1921.
