SITUATION IN IRELAND
A FIERCE ENCOUNTER AFFRAY IN DUBLIN BTREET. HAND-TO-HAND FIGHTING. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assu.) Received March 10, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, March 15. A semi-oflieial account of the light in Brunswick street, Dublin, shows that it was one of the most savage affairs in the city's history. Apart from the attack from the house there was a regular ambush in the street. Several parties of armed civilians opened lire on two tenders loaded with auxiliaries, who were about to raid the premises. The driver of the first car, with great presence of mind,, instead of slopping, charged the group ahead, from whom the heaviest fusillade came, and the auxiliaries leapt into their midst. Shots and fierce hand-to-hand duels ensued. The commanding ofilcer, who had emptied both his revolvers, found himself confronted by a man with a large automatic pistol. lie tackled his assailant low, brought him to the ground, and made him a prisoner. Throe more attackers were reported killed. Une auxiliary was so badly wounded that he died later, and another is dying. The auxiliaries, while routing out the airmed civilians in the vicinity, were engaged in a series of isolated encounters, suffering and inflicting several casualties. AFFRAY IN DUBLIN. POLICE LCmRYFIRED ON. SEVERAL KILLED AND WOUNDED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received March 16, 12.35 p.m. LONDON, March 15. Shots were fired at a police car from o house in Brunswick street, Dublin. The fire was returned, three civilians being killed, of whom two were armed. A quantity of ammunition and revolvers was found in the house. Five police were wounded, two seriously.
