The debate which was to have been held by St. Peter's Young People's Club to-morrow night has been postponed until Thursday of Easter week. The small bathing peninsular at the Hamilton Lake is to be improved, anu the Lake bed around it excavated to a depth of a further two feet, to facilitate diving. The Public Works' overseer's residence at Awaklno was entered on Saturday evening and £l6B stolen. The money, which was mainly new £5 and £1 notes, was contained in a padlookod leather bag. There is no clue to the offender. W The driver of a motor lorry had a * narrow escape from a serious accident at the Victoria Street railway crossing yesterday afternoon. He was driving along Victoria Street as a train was approaching, and just managed to , swerve in time to avoid a collision. "I understand that your wife likes a gamble and that you do not?" asked counsel of a Maori witness in a forgery case at the Hamilton Supreme Court, yesterday. The native paused awhile, and then to the great amusement of the Court, slowly replied, as he smiled broadly: "I like to gamble also." The Te Awamutu bowling teams which visit Hamilton to-morrow (St. Patrick's Day) have altered their arrangements, and will play Hamilton in the afternoon instead of in the niorn- ' Ing as originally arranged. The teams from Frankton will therefore play on the Hamilton green in the morning instead of in the afternoon. An aquatic carnival will be held at the Hamilton Lake on Easter Monday. The Domain Board, last night, granted the local swimming centre permission to charge Is to adults and 6d to children on that day. The leave applies only to that portion of the reserve adjacent to the regular swimming area. The following are the results of the v eight-guessing competitions at the Morrinsville A. and P. A special meeting of the Hamilton Domain Board is to meet the sports bodies of the town shortly to discuss the allotment of grounds for the coming season, and to report back to the Board on the matter. Sports bodies seeking grounds would therefore do well to appoint their delegates and communicate their names to the secretary of the Board at once. Rev. J. Bissett gave a very earnest and intensely interesting address at First Church, last evening. The speaker has a very attractive style, and by means of apt illustrations and racy anecdote, and more especially of very faithful application of the truth to present day experience and duty, he grips the close attention o fhls hearers to the close. Miss Bissett's rendering of a sacred solo to an old Scotch tune was very much enjoyed. A meeting of the congregation of Bt. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Matamata, was held on the 7th inst., when Rev. T. H. Hoseveare, of Cambridge, Moderator of the Charge, presided over a fair attendance of members. It was decided to invite Rev. H. C. Stewart to continue his ministry in the charge for a period of twelve months. It is understood that Mr Stewart is prepared to accept the invitation, and with the sanction of the Waikato Presbytery will be inducted to the charge at a suitable date. Judging by the large number of feminine enthusiasts at the baths, last -i evening, the stand being packed with w spectators, . ladies' swimming has "taken on" in Hamilton. A feature which commended itself, both to the public and those interested in functions of this sort, was the promptitude with which events took place, every girl being on the mark at scheduled time. -The men's organisation can very well take a leaf out of the ladies' book In this particular. At the conclusion of the programme Dr. Douglas called for three cheers for Miss Harrison and Mrs H. Boss, who were primarily responsible for much of the success of the evening. These were given heartily. The Farmers' Co-operative Company's cricket team, which has successfully defended /three challenges this season from the New Zealand Dairy Co., Waikato Combined Auctioneering firms, and Associated Banks tor the Cricket Challenge Shield, which was presented by the directors of the F.A.C., will proceed to Auckland tomorrow (St. Patrick's Day) to try conclusions with the combined Auckland Auctioneering Firms. J. H. Reynolds. The lithographic plans of the Hamilton Domains are entirely misleading, according to Mr A. Swarbrick, chairman of the Hamilton Domain Board. They were, he said, published from plans prepared many years ago, when the controlling authorities at the time plotted many of them out for building sites. The reservoir should never have been placed where it was. The whole thing was a hideous mistake, The new reservior was also placed in a wrong position following on the original mistake, and it had now brought the town into the Lake, which was previously quite secluded. He was sure the Borough Council did not wish to hamper the Board in any way, and the only thing to do under the circumstances was to cover up the blemish as much as possible. A very enjoyable time was spent at the Baptist Church last night, when Madame Strathearn anil Sister Kathleen interested a very large audience. Madame Strathearn, who has cancelled six months of her professional engagements in order to undertake a tour ol Australasia on behalf of the funds of the West Ham (London) mission, has a beautiful voice, and her singing of "Calvary," "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Does Jesus Care?" proved very enjoyable. She also told many stories of her war work, when she sang for the soldiers at the front. Sister Kathleen spoke of the work of the mission, and made a strong appeal for assistance in carrying on the very necessary woi'k among the poor of London. To. night Madame Strathearn will sing at the Methodist Church. By reason of the great demand for tickets and the limited accommodation for spectators at the public baths during the great swimming performances to be given on Saturday, lickelholders will be given preference. The P baths will be open afternoon and evening half-an-hour before the first event. No tickets will be sold at the baths until w/thin ten minutes of starting the carnival. Seats cannot then be guaranteed. Patrons wishing to soeure scats are advised lo purchase the available tickets immediately from the bath's caretaker or from Mi 1 * Stevens, stationer, Railway Buildings.
