MR LLOYD GEORGE

AND THE LABOUR PARTY. (From a London Correspondent). LONDON, January 7. Mr Lloyd George is going to Birmingham, there to receive the Ireedoai of that notable fity. II is alrcadv evident that he will not find unity in regard to him personally on the part of those who arc to lie ids hosts on Hie occasion. There is a Labour group in the City Council, and Alderman Stevens, its chairman, was quite plain and decisive in Ihe hostility lie expressed at a meeting this week, when what is described as a scene look place in the Council Chamber. It really was not much of a “scene.” Alderman Stevens wauled lo know how far Ihe rates were to ho charged with Ihe expense of the proposed, compliment lo the Prime Minister, and went on to remark that the Lloyd George Government had caused more deaths, misery and privation than any of its predecessors 'there were cries of dissent, but the view put forth by the Labouf group,ls one held by a great many besides Labour men. Let it be owing to ill-luck, the adverse circumstances of the times, what you will, this period in the life of the United Kingdom people will be known in history as one of llio worst they Have over had. To what extent Ihe fault is with the Government can only he a matter of opinion, but a strong case can he made out for the proposition that by their unblushing abandonments of basic political principles, (he non-fulfilment of then* promises, and the tenderness they have shown for class interests at a time when they were professing lo lead 11 1 c nation in a common effort, the present Government is easily the worst that England ever had.
