LABOUR IN BRITAIN
SET-BACK FOR DIRECT ACTION. DECISION BY CONFERENCE. (Australian and N.Z. Cahle Assn.) Received February 24, 9.10 a.m. LONDON, February 23. The direct actionists had anothef set-back at the Labour Conference on unemployment. An overwhelming decision supports pressing the. demands by constitutional action. Mr J. R. Clynes denounced the Government failure to take adequate measures. If Parliament was unable ta solve the problem, they were justified in calling on industrial forces to deal with the situation. Mr J. H. Thomas contended that Par* llamcnt was the only body capable of dealing with the problem. Referring to the suggested sympathy strike, they would help the unemployed more b/ giving one day's pay. Respecting, a, general strike, Mr Thomas asked if there was any sane trade union official or member of the rank and file who suggests such a remedy. It would Increase unemployment and dislocat* trade and industry.
