THE SEVRES TREATY

PROBLEM OF SMYRNA. BRITAIN AND FRANCE ACREE. OFFER BY GREEK DELEGATE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received February 22, 10.15 p.m. LONDON, February 22It is understood that at the preliminary conference, France and Britain were in agreement to solve the nuestion of Smyrna by making it semiautonomous under a Christian Governor, witli half the police Turkish, the other half being Christian. It was also proposed to return (o Turkey onefourth of Thrace. The Allies' decision to hear M. Kalogeropoulos was unexporled. and left a favourable impression on the .'ireek Mission regarding the Allies' desire for absolute fairness. The conversation at the conference tiible was most friendly. M. Kalogeropoulos. at iho conference, offered to clear Anatolia of Musfapha Rental's troops if the Allies removed the. embargo against the Greek Goernmen' raising funds in foreign countries. He said the (ireek people were ready to make any sacrifice to retain the Treaty of Sevres. KEMALIST DELEGATION. A TRUCULENT REPRESENTATIVE. ANTAGONISM TO TEWFIK PASHA. Received February 23, 10.23 p.m. LONDON, February 22. The Kemalist delegation arrived at Victoria Siation to-nignt. Bckil Sami Bey, a rugged Kemalist leader, in a truculent interview with the Daily Telegraph, professed the deepest respect for Tewfik Pasha, who was so kind as to send a representative to meet him on arrival. He had no doubt that both delegations would meet, pointing out that both were staying _at the same hotel, though on different floors. Nevertheless Tcwfik's delegations represented nobody and nothing, the Kemalists being (he sole legal representatives of Turkey, and they would most certainly refuse to co-operate with Tewfik. though, of course, they could not prevent the conference inviting Tewfik and his friends. Asked if he considered the Sevres Treaty to be a suitable basis for the re-establishment of Eastern peace, Sami said if it were so there would be no points in coming to Condon. Despite Sami Bey's arrival it is semi-offieially announced tint the British Government did not invite the Kemalists. BRITISH ATTITUDE. AWAITING DEVELOPMENTS. Received February 22. I 0.-ir> p.m. LONDON, February 22. The Morning Post says thai the British attitude towards the Sevres Treaty is [hat Turkey cannot be trusted fo govern the old empire. This policy was'not. affected by the, establishment of a Kemalist Government or the Creek elections. Further, it was so difficult lo reach an agreement and settlement under the Sevres Treaty, and it would be hazardous to attempt to revise il. Finally, all the treaties hang together, and if the Sevres Treaty was thrown overboard it might lie a precedent for treating the Versailles Treaty in the same way. The British deiegates, therefore', will i ot, submit concrete proposals, but will lie reaily to listen lo the arguments for revision and proposals to give effect thereto.
