GENERAL SMUTS' VICTORY
A STRIKING TRIBUTE. TO HIS PERSONALITY. A SECESSIONIST ..DEBACLE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received February 14, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, February 13. The Times' Capetown correspondent, in a striking tribute to General Smuts, says his marvellous energy, brilliance and devotion in personally conducting (he campaign were mainly responsible for its success. Never in the history c.f South African politics has tflre personality of a single individual counted so much. Two' other important factors contributing to tlie secessionist debacle were: First, the desire of the English-speaking community to meet the Dutch-speaking people in a great Joint effort to obliterate racialism, and secondly, the conviction of the sane elements of the utter futility of republicanism and the realisation by the Dutch of the e.conunic, defensive and financial advantages of partnership in the Commonwealth.
