CHARGE OF MURDER
FATHER SLAYS HIS SON. NEEDHAM ON TRIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court, Thomas Needham, an elderly farmer, was charged with the murder of his son, William, on January 16. The Crown Prosecutor said the accused made a savage attack on his son. practically battering his skull to hits. After the tragedy, accused asked one of his daughters to shoot him, and later he cut his throat and .jumped into a well. He clilVlbed out again, and a neighbour persuaded him to go io bed. Accused afterwards complained that Ills son swore ,it him. He said to his ilr.ufrliter: "1 am sorry, girl, I have. brought, you to this. Give me some poison." „., In evidence, a daughter of the accuse,! said she had heard that in England her father fell from a tree, and suffered from sunstroke when 20 years ot age, and about three years ago he received a blow from a shackle pin. She described various strange phases in accused's conduct, indicating that he was not of a sound mind.
