LEADS TO SCENE IN A CHURCH
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received February 1 i, 7.25 p.m. LONDON, February 1 i
Cardinal Homme's pastoral was rM d in all the Roman Catholic Churches yesterday. It draws attention to the tragedy of Ireland, which grows more, acute. Horror and outrage, aggression and repression are reported daily. "I have," it continues, "grave reason to believe IhaL some of my own (lock, impelled by a legitimate love of country and an urgent longing for the realisation of their lawful aspirations, are allowing themselves to become implicated in societies which are in opposition to the. laws of God. The name of Fenianism is no longer used, but the activity il. is connected willi is .still alive. Cardinal Manning's denunciation applies in unchanging measures to that activity by whatever name it is called. It may he known unerringly by its principles, teachings and fruits. I desire Cardinal Manning's words to be used continually for, safeguarding the Hock and for Hi" guidance of the clergy in the direction of individual consequences."
The pastoral urges prayers for Parliament, which it Is hoped will deal justly and promptly with the tragedy of Ireland.
There was a scene at a church in Marlon Lane, Strand, after the pastoral had been read. A worshipper jumped In liig feet and shouted: "It Is disgracerill that there is not a word about, the Black and Tans." At this, there were several "Hear, hears "
