PATTERSON'S TRIAL POSTPONED

FRESH JURY PANEL WANTED

The rc-trials of Matthew Livingstone and .lack Martindale on charges of carrying on the business or occupation of bookmuking, were taken at the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr Justice Chapman. \Tlie evidence in each trial whs similar to that given in the previous trials. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty in each case. When the case against James Patterson, charged with carrying on the business or occupation of a bookmaker, was called in the Supreme Court to-day, the Crown Prosecutor applied for an adjournmeni until Monday next, for a fresh jury to be empanelled. "I propose to stand down." said counsel, ' the whole of tli*' 24 jurors who served on the Martindale and Livingstone cases, and this would only leave 1;< jurors on the panel. I can make the application, your Honor, in view of the fact thai the evidence in the case against Martindale and Livingstone was practically uncontradicted, and I feel thai it should come before a frc.'li Jury."

Mr O'Leary, who appeared for Patterson, strongly protested, hut Judge Chapman said: "1 shall grant the application, as I think il is only right. Seeir.p what happened yesterday, I think the matter should come before a fresh jury panel." The trial was postponed (ill Monday.
