Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P. for Raglan, went to Pukekohe to-day to be pre- ; sent at the opening of the Technical I School by the Prime Minister. Mr J. A. Young, M.p., left to-day for Hie Northern Wairoa. He will return on Saturday. Mr J. Finlay, Clerk of the Court at Taumarunui, lias received notice of his transfer to the Whakatane Court. Air L, J. Du Flou, organiser of the French Red Cross Society in New | Zealand, lias left Hamilton to take up a responsible position in Wellington. Air T. Harle Giles has been reappointed Conciliation Commissioner at Auckland for a fifth term of three years. Tlie Prime Alinister, Hon, W. F. Massey, is expected to pass through Frankton by the Main Trunk express to-night, on his return to Wellington. Air W. Jess, of Rukuhia, lias left for Wanganui, where lie will lake up ids duties as a resident master in the Collegiate school. Air J. K. Lowe, District Railway Engineer at Invercargill, who was formerly in charge of the FranklonOhakunc section, is in Hamilton. Mr and Airs S. McLernon, old Hamiltonians, but for many years residents of Napier, are visiting Hamilton, and renewing old friendships. Lieut.-Colonel J. E. Barton, Chief Staff Officer, Canterbury Military District, has resigned, as he intends to take up another occupation. Air Frank O’Sullivan is in Hamilton, making arrangements for the presentation of the picture, “Possum Paddock.” at the Theatre Royal on Tuesday night. Tlie late Air Clarence Hopkins, ona of Hie victims of the Castlepoint boating fatality, who was manager of the Alasterton Co-operative Dairy Company’s factory, had, in recent years, won numerous championship cups and trophies at A. and P. Shows for exhibits made by the Alasterton company. He had also won first prizes at Hie Sydney Royal Show, and intended again exhibiting in Sydney this year, also at the Royal Show in England. Mr J. Rankin Reed, K.C., who has been appointed as a Judge of Hie supreme Court, is at present head of Hie legal linn of Messrs. Reed, Towle, Heiiahy, and Cooper, and is one of the most able advocates practising in New Zealand. He was born in Ipswich, Uuecnslaud, on December 20, 1804, ana is the eldest sun of the late Rev, George McCullagh Reed. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, tlie Dunedin High School, Victoria College, Jersey and Glare College in the University of Combndge. He served his articles with Alessrs Devore and Cooper, solicitors, of Auckland, and was admitted to Hie New Zealand Bar on June 18, 1887. He practised as a barrister and solicitor at the Bay of Islands until January, 1890, going thence to Auckland, where he has since beeen practising. Under the territorial system of defence, Mr Reed was lieu-tenant-colonel in command of the 3rd (Auckland) Infantry Regiment, retiring with the rank of colonel in <l9ll. In tlie same year lie was appointed Judge Advocate-General for New Zealand, a position he still holds. For his services in this capacity he was, in 1919, awarded the G.B.E. In 1913 ha was appointed a K.C. Mr Reed has always taken a keen interest in education and was a member of tlie Auckland Education Board. He has held Hie posi-’ Hons of president of the Auckland Law Society, president of the Auckland Club, and president of Hie Auckland Garrison Officers’ Club. He has taken a prominent part in Freemasonry, having formerly held, for a period of seven years. Hie position of District Grand Alaster for Auckland under the English constitution.
