A revision of the system of reserving sleeping berths o.i Sleeping Berths the Main Trunk on express lias been The Railways. brought about as the result of carbon taken in connection with a Christchurch complaint made just before Christmas. This complaint was that although the - i.ailway Department would not issue a sleeping berth withcut the production of a railway ticket, it was impossible to purchase a ticket more than three days before the date of the trip, and by that time all the sleeping berths had Jbeen engaged through tiie Tourist Office or other ways. The promise of an alteration in the system is contained in the following letter dated .lanuary £6, from the General Manager of Railways (Mr P. \V. McVilly) to the president of the Canterbury Progress League:—“With reference to your telegram regarding inability to obtain sleeping berth accommodation, from investigations made it was found that a lack of uniformity in the method adopted in reserving sleeping berths had crept into the practice in different districts. Steps have been taken to remedy Ibis. Berths may new he reserved not more than two weeks prior to the date of travel, on payment of the sleeping berth fee, and aiso on condition that a first-class ticket will be purchased for the full railway journey to Ho made.”
