Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the authorlecturer, passed through Frankton by last night's Auckland-Wellington express.
Mr H. Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been on a visit to Australia, has returned to Wellington. Captain Burn and Staff-Sergeant-Major Drinnan, of Hamilton, are visiting Te Kuiti in connection with the No. 4 Group rifle meeting.
Mr J. Farrell, architect to the Board of Education, who has been on a visit to the Waikato, returned to Auckland by the Main Trunk express at mid-day.
The Government has appointed Messrs George Gray, R. H. Heappy, J. M. Mules, R. Baker, and D. G. McMillan to be members of the board of
trustees of the Hauraki drainage district.
Mr Andrew Fisher, who has been
acting as High Commissioner for Australia in London, has booked passages for himself and his wife and family by the Omar for January 29. Mr Miles P. Schofleld, engineer in charge of the Waikato Hospital, will leave to-morrow on a month's tour ot the Dominion, when he will visit all the principal hospitals.
His Excellency the Governor-Gene-ral and Lady Jellicoe, with their family and suite, passed througr Frankton by special train early this morning, on their way from Wellington to Auckland.
At the meeting of the Frankton School Committee, held last night, Mr S. L. Dickey was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mrs Gosling, who is leaving the district.
The Coal Mine Owners' Association has elected Mr W, Reece as president and Hon. E. W. Alison as vice president. The executive will consist of Sir George Clifford, Messrs Flavell, Owen and S. Wreston. Mr J. E. L. Cull, designing engineer tf the Public Works Department, has icft for England to transact business
'in connection with machinery required by the department, principally in conr ncction with the electrification of the ■ f tira tunnel. Staff Nurse C. Bloxornc, of the Waikato Hospital, and District Nurse H. E. Roberts, stationed at Mokai, have re-
signed. The Board, in receiving the . resignations, yesterday, resolved to thank the nurses for their services in the past. The death took place at Opotiki on Wednesday night of Mr Alfred B. Auckland, who had been a resident of that district for a number of years. Mr Buckland, who was an ex-Thamesite was well known throughout the Goldl'elds and Bay of Plenty districts, and identified himself with all branches of sport, and was the first secretary of the Thames Bowling Club. He leaves a widow and five of a family.
