Mr J. B. Thomas, chairman of ths Piako County Council, Is in Hamilton to-day.
Second-Lieutenant R. V. Closey, of the 16th (Waikato) Regiment, has been promoted Lieutenant. Mr Edward Jones has been appointed a member of the Ohinewal Domain Board, in the place of Mr Thomas Neil, who has left the district. Mr C. G. Fry, a noted Australian pianist, who is visiting New Zealand, is a guest of Mr and Mrs \V. R. Fox, of the Waikato College of Music.
The death is announced of Mr Henry Brittain, who had been in business in Wellington as a chemist sines 1874.
Mr Penn, proprietor and manager of the Otakt Mail, is on a visit to Cambridge, and is staying with Rev. J. D. and Mrs McArthur.
Mr C. H. Black, who was recently appointed Second Assistant-Land Registrar at Christchurch, has been further promoted, and wijl shortly leave i for Auckland, to be Second Assistant- * Land Registrar in that office of the department.
The Rev. J. P. Jones, 8.D., of Thames, has received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Oskaloosha University for a thesis on "The Human. Cry and a Divine Response." Mrs Martin, of Palmerston North, won the provincial ladies' golg championship, beating Mrs Guy Williams, of Masterton, the Australian champion, three up and one to play. The winner is a recent arrival from Scotland.
Mr A. H. Foote, of the Hamilton staff of the Public Trust Office, was recently presented with a tea-set and Jardiniere to mark the occasion of his marriage. Mr Carmine, acting district accountant, made the presentation. An old Bay of Plenty settler, Mr n. H. Mi Fortune, died last week. The deceased was born in Edinburgh 52 years ago, and came to* New Zealand when a boy of 15. H» opened a store in Opouriao Valley, and sold out 16 years ago. Since then he had conducted the Whakatane Hotel. Two honours have been conferred upon New Zealanders in connection with the Prince's teur, the Knight Commander.ship of the Victorian Order having been conferred on Sir V('m. Fraser, K. 8., Minister in charge of the tour in New Zealand, and MajorGeneral Sir Edward W. C. Chaytor, K.C.M.G., C.B.
The following officers have been transferred to the 4th (Waikato) Mounted Rifles:—2nd Lieut. L. V. Bellingham, from the unattached list ("to be Lieutenant); Lieut. A. G. Macdonald, from N.Z. Garrison Artillery; 2nd Lieut. C. F. White, D.C.M., from the retired list
The following honours have hern conferred: —Order of the British Empire: Knight Grand Gross, Sir Owen Cox, chairman of the Overseas Shipping Commission. Knight Commanders: Professor David, geologist and Antarctic explorer; Mr Arthur Rickard .loynton-Smith, ex-Lord Mayor of Svdney, and formerly a New Zealander.
