HAMILTON'S ELEVATION
MORE POSTAL OFFICIALS COMING. ACCOMMODATION DIFFICULTIES. APPEAL TO HOUSEHOLDERS. The elevation of Hamilton to the status of a chief postal district means a tremendous increase in the amount uf work that will fall upon the local office. For one tiling 250 sub-offices will come under the direct jurisdiction of Hamilton, and ail mailers appertaining to those offices will be dealt with here. Something like 10,000 savings bank accounts will be kept at Hamilton, and depositors will in future be able to make deposits and withdrawals without delay, and thereby save themselves those odd shillings which have at present to be paid for telegrams if one desires to make a withdrawal on the same day. Depositors will have to give written notice to Auckland, on a form to be obtained at; any post office, i ’of (heir desire to have their accounts I transferred to Hamilton before a ; transfer can be made. - All this increased work will, Of j course, necessitate a big increase in the staff, and the Department is concerned over finding accommodation for Ihc. additional officers to lie "'"drafted here. At least. 21 single men will be sent here from other districts for duty ! in Ihe savings bank and money order | office alone, while there will be further j additions later. Accommodation is l particularly cramped in Hamilton, and ; it becomes almost a duty on local rcsi- i dents who have one or more rooms to . spare to intimate such to the postal j authorities. Unless householders open | their hearts and homes to these men, I there seems a big chance of them I having to walk the streets at night, and j take Iheir meals in restaurants. The ! Department, is most desirous that rcsi- I dents should give what aid they can ! in the matter.
