The slaughtermen's strike at Islington, 'over docketing carcases, which began 'a week ago, has ended, the men returning to work to-day. FIRE AT WANQANUI. WAXGANUI, Tuesday. A fire occurred shortly after five o'clock this morning at the Southern Cross biscuit factory in one of the confectionery packing departments. The brigade was hampered through the seat of the fire being situated about 500 feet from the nearest hydrant, bu,t succeeded in confining the fire to the department, in which it broke out upstairs. The damage is estimated at about £IOOO, the gutted section of the building being insured for £SOO. Four firemen had a narrow escape from the falling portion of the brick walls. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court, this morning Benjamin Bright, charged with the manslaughter 'of Robert MeXab on iboard the steamer Armagh, and with assaulting MeXab, was found not guilty on the first count, but guilty on the second. Sentence was deferred. AN EXPENSIVE JOY RIDE. DANNEVIRKE. Tuesday. Five youths who appropriated a motor car from the main street, went for a joy ride and abandoned it when it broke down, appeared before justicesthis morning charged with .the theft' of the car. They were convicted and fined "sums ranging from £lO down to £5 and also ordered to pay £8 costs and damages, in default one month's imprisonment. CRUSHED BY A TRAMCAR. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. Andrew Logan, a widower, aged 50, residing at Caversham, died in hospital as a result of an accident, which occurred on the evening of April .30. Logan •was a motorman in the employ of the Tramway Department, and while adjusting a destination sign in front of the .car wasxrushed. between that car and ' another which was immediately .ft front. He was attended by a doctor, and apparently improved, but on Saturday became worse and was removed to the hospital. An inquest was opened, bi.it was adjourned to permit o f a postmortem being made. GUILTY OF BIGAMY. PALMERSTOX X., Tuesday. Albert Ernest Kearns pleaded guilty at the .Police Court to a charge of bigamy.., . Accused was committed I'or sentence ..at'' the Supreme Court at Palmerston North.
