MATAMATA. Close Settlement. A thousand-acre block, known as Nathan's, situated between the Wailiou river and To Poi, on the Malaniala-Tc Poi road, lias been subdivided into 10 sections of JOO acres each and sold. Among the purchasers are Messrs .1. 12. Davidson, li. J. Munro, Cotter Bros., P. Ouinlan, \V. Cleary, Ryan Bros., Wliara Wlvara, and Mrs McNalK Good work is being done by the new settlers in breaking- in the new country and preparing it for dairying land. Town Board. At the fortnightly meeting of the Matamata Town Board Mr J. F. Vosper wrote resigning hfa seat. The resignation was accepted with regret. The chairman referred to •the practice of fanners and tradespeople of driving on the- newly-formed footpaths, slating that it was useless the Board doing work if residents destroyed it. It was decided to draw the attention of the police to the matter and ask them to make an exampfc of offenders. The chairman and Mr J. Mclntyre were appointed a hall committee and the chairman and Messrs Gordon and Mclntyre a works .committee. With the view to asking for a continuous telephone service, Mr W. A. Gordon was appointed to investigate. Farms Change Hands. Mr F. W. Lansdown has purchased Mr L. C. Vickers' farm of 16 acres at Te Poi. Mr Lansdown is now in possession. It is understood that the price paid was £32 10s per acre. New Post Office. An important step in the progress of the district is the erection of a post office, which lias been taken in hand by the Sunny Park Dairy Company. Progress in connection with the work has been held up in consequence of delay in getting timber, but supplies have now come lo hand and 'the office should he ready for use within a week. Miss M. Cobb has been appointed postmistress. The building, which is sufficiently commodious to serve the district for some time to come, is likely to be opened with ceremony. PUTARURU. Social Evening. A pleasant social evening was held in the Putaruvu' Hall last week on the occasion of the transfer of Mr A. McDonald to Frankton, and Mr C. C. Harris to Kotorua. Mr McDonald is being promoted lo shunter. He had been in Putaruru for two years, while Mr Harris had been stationed here for ten years. On behalf of the railwaymen and residents, Mr A. Aslimord prOs< ntcd each of the guests with a, travelling hag and rug. Eulogistic speeches were made, and regret was expressed thai lliey were going. Songs were rendered bv Messrs Harris and Kay Brown. ' Dancing then became the order of the evening, and all enjoyed themselves. , A Land Boom. Land has been changing hands freely at Puketurua, more than half of last year's settlers having sold. The price paid for a partly Improved farm of 1000 acres was £l2 10s, while that for improved small holdings has been in the vicinity or £2O. A farewell social to Mr and Mrs <'. Greci) and to Mr and Mrs 1?. Gremi was sriven in the Hnirini Hall on Monday. The hall was filled In overflowing with 'fhn many friends of the two parlies. After a speech by Mr Puttie, both parties were presented with a silver inkstand, and "For They are dolly Good Fellows," was sung. Soii{;» wore sung by Miss Clifford, and Messrs Wnv and Dallon. Extras .were played by Misses Clifford and Tnghain. A'daintv supper was provided by the ladies. The floor was in first-class order for ilanrins, and first-class music was supplied by Mr Dallon, and a very enjoyable time was spent. The evening closed by singing "Auld Lang Syne."
