SOLDIERS' SETTLEMENT.
£0,702,422 ALREADY SPENT

Hun. D. 11. Guthrie yesterday stated that the amount already spent by the Government in connection with soldiers settlements totals £9,702,422. This sum, Mr Guthrie claimed, is the best indication of the extent to winch assistance is being granted to returned soldiers by piaciug taem on the .aiid, and in hem-.-, bi their own.

Replying to a dcpe.l ition from delegates of the meat companies yesterday, Mr Massey said he hoped to have a reply in a few days from the Imperial authorities, stating whether or not they were going to renew or terminate tire existing meat contracts. Replying to questions, Mr Massey said he had reason to believe from information a month old that the Imperial Government contracts with the Argentine had ceased, and, that they would not bo renewed, nor did he think contracts had been made with Australia. He had been given the assurance that New Zealand would not be placed in any worse position than Australia or any other part of the Empire in regard 'o'any contracts of the sort.

SLY-GROG SELLING
IN AUCKLAND RESTAURANT.
AUCKLAND, Saturday
A seauel to a raid on the "Stars and Stripes" restaurant on the night of Thursday last was enacted at the Police Court yesterday afternoon, before Mr Wilson. S.M., when the keeper of the house, Marigan 3Vlilic:ch, an Austrian, was charged with selling liquor on unlicensed premises. The police stated that there was ample evidence that extensive drinking had been carried op, enquiries showing that Milicich had bought largo quantities from a wholesale dealer in town and also 'from hotels. The total value of the purchases had.been about £l6O, and this had been retailed at about 100 per cent profit . 'The Sub-Inspector added this "sly-grogging" was a serious menace to the community, and had resulted in a marked increase in Sun. day drinking. Defendant pleaded "Guilty," and the maximum fine of £SO was inflicted, an order being made for the forfeiture of the liquor and the payment of costs. CHARGE OF INCENDIARISM. YOUTH PLEADS GUILTY. PALMEESTON K, Saturday. In the Police Court to-day a youth named William Walker, aged 10, -was charged with wilfully setting fire to a six-roomed cottage at the Weraroa State Farm, the property of the New Zealand Government, on January 7. Accused, who was an inmate of the farm, pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for lentence. ' RACEHORSE DISQUALIFIED. OWNER FINED £2O. WOODVILLE, Saturday. A meeting of the stewards of the Woodville District Jockey Club last night Considered the Silver Tongue case—an objection from S. W. Tatham, The following resolution was passed: "That the objection be upheld, and the horse, Silver Tongue, be disqualified for the race; that the owner, T. E. Welch, be fined- £2O; an,d that the action tof J. Sullivan be reported to the District Committee." It is understood that an appeal will be lodged.
