(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 1-8,. 11.40 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 15.
Unusual importance is attached to the Irish municipal elections/ to-day. It is anticipated that the Sinn Feiners will control tbe councils outside Ulster. The results of proportional representation are awaited with interest.
There have been many hints that the dismissal of Sir Joseph Byrne, head of the Irish Constabulary, was due to defects in his administration. It is generally admitted that he personally was popular with the force. The only specific suggestion hitherto had been the continued disappearance of ammunition, which Sir Joseph Byrne's department failed to prevent.
