(Australian and N.Z. Cable As.sn.) Received January IS, 5.5 p.m. PARIS, January 16. M. Paul Deschanel has been elected President M. Clemenceau withdrew his candidacy after 41. Deschanel secured 403 votes to M. Clemenceau s 389 in the preliminary congress. M. Deschanel, who was born in 1856, has tilled many important official positions, and was"elected President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1912. He has written many political and official books.

The resignation of the Clemenceau Cabinet will be officially announced tomorrow.

This entails the disappearance of M. M. Clemenceau, Pichon, Tardicia and Klotz. as peace plenipotentiaries, but M. Clemenceau will attend the conference till the new Cabinet is formed.

It is expected that M. Poincare will charge M. Millorand with the formation of a Cabinet.

M.Deschanel obtained 734 votes out of 889, which is a record majority.
