Speaking at the National War Savings banquet in London the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced that the Government was making an early issue of five-year exchequer bonds at 5J per cent, Mr Chamberlain paid a tribute to the labours of the War Savings Committee, and said that the amount invested in war savings certificates was £200,000,000 despite the fact that deposits in the post office and in trustee savings banks had increased from under £300,000,000 in 1914 to nearly £800,000,000 last October. As regards stabilising the finances he declared there were no shortcuts or easy remedies. lie urged the continuation of the work of the war savings organisation, in order to inculate the habit of thrift Since the armistice the sum of £95,000,000 had been invested in war saving certificates.
