The position disclosed by (lie treasurers statement at a meeting Defaulting of the Waikato Hospital Local Board on Thursday that Bodies. no less than £iVT i was outstanding in local body contributions for the present financial year, which ends in is, to say the least, extremely unsatisfaclor.s The Hospital is a n expensive institution to maintain, with an ever-increasing expenditure, and unless the contributing local bodies pay up promptly the institution cannot he expected to work efficiently. Food and medical supplies have to he purchased, the large staff paid, and all the other great contingent expenses regularly met. All this cannot be done without money, yet it is stated that no attempt whatever has been made, by certain local bodies to meet their hospital obligations. Every latitude, as one member of the Board pointed out, had been given local bodies in making their payments, but quite a. number of them appear lo have taken advantage of the Board’s leniency to try and evade the debt altogether. The decision of the Board to prosecute, defaulters should have a stimulating effect, and we trust that it wilt be *nit into operation
