BLOCKING SOCIALISTS

JIM NEW YORK LEGISLATURE. NATIONAL STORM OF PROTEST. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) NEW YORK, Jan. 13. The action of the New York State Legislature in refusing, by a virtually unanimous vote, to permit five Socialist members to take their scats, on the ground that tiiey were members of a parly which opposed the war, has caused a national storm of protest. Prominent Democrats and Republicans, and many Governors, Federal Congressmen, and publicists have sent letters to the Legislature protesting, against the action, on the ground that it contravenes the principle of repicsenlalive government. The Legislature defeated a resolution to reconsider Lie action, but the ousted members will be given a hearing.
