A Christchurch business firm wished the other day to obtain a money order for a small sum for remittance to a resident in Vancouver. II was found that the charge of remitting the'money, which used to be 3d in ttie pound, is now 6s 8d in the pound. On inquiry being made it was found that none of the officials at the Post-office could explain the charge. About 14 days ago orders to this effect came from Wellington, but no reasons were given. However, British postal notes, bearing a poundage of 3d in the £, are accepted at about 25 of the chief Canadian towns and cities, and money could be sent by this medium. A shearing tally, said to ho a record for Marlborough, was accomplished at a sheep station in the Awatero district. In the ordinary eight-hour day Mr 11. Register, using tho machine, put through 20G sheep, comprising longwools with good fleeces. Tho record (said to bo for the world) so far is held by John Hoppy, who shore 373 in a day of nine hours on Mr Pharazyn’s station. On tho same date throe other shearers at tho same station put j.tu .ugh £ll, £'l9. and 3C2 respectively.
