The Governor-General has been advised that the King has been graciously pleased to confer the following honours on the occasion of the New Year: K.C.M.G. Hon. William Herbert.Herries. K.B.E. Hon. Eobert Heaton Rhodes. C.M.G. Hon. Dr. Maui Poruare. Frank David Thomson. SIE WILLIAM HEERIES. Sir William Herries, who has been created a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, is a native of London, A. where he was born in 1856, hia father T being the late Mr H. C. Herries, a prominent London barrister. He was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1880. He is also a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. In 1881 he came to New Zealand and settled in the Auckland district. For some years he was engaged in farming at Shaftesbury, near Te°Aroha. He was a member of the Piako County Council from 1891 until 1899, and occupied a seat on the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board from 1893 until 1897. He first sought Parliamentary honours in 1896, when he was returned for the Bay of Plenty seat, defeating the sitting member, the late Hon. W. Kelly, by 143 votes. Mr Herries was again returned for the Bay of Plenty in 1899, 1902, and 1905. In 1908, when the boundaries of the electorate were altered and the constituency of Tauranga was formed, Mr Herries contested the new seat and defeated Mr J. A. Young, the present member for Waikato, by 1303 votes. He was again re-elected for Tauranga in 1911, 1914, and at the recent general election. During the regime of the Liberal )f\ Ministry Mr Herries was a l«afllng ' member of the Opposition party, which was led by the present Prime Minister. Wihen Mr Massey's first Cabinet was formed in July, 1912, Mr Herries received the portfolios of Railways and Native Affairs. In 1915 he also took over the portfolios ~of Customs and Marine, and he held these until the formation of the .National Cabinet in August of the same year. In the National Ministry he administered the departments of Eailways and Native Affairs. On the dissolution .of the National Government in August last • Mr Herries' relinquished the portfolio of Eailways (which was taken over by Mr Massey); and has since been in charge of the departments of Customs and Marine as well as Native Affairs.
