CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

| MONTHLY MEETING. Tiie ordinary meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, held in the Hoiuugh Council Chambers, on Monday, was presided over by Mr Geo. Parr (president). There were li memb ;rs present. The Railway “Cut.” The Association of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce outlined the steps which it had taken in the endeavour to mitigate the hardship caused by the railway “cut.” It was reluctantly compelled to come to the conclusion that the contention of the Minister of Railways and General Manager of Railways was correct — namely, that Hie possibility of any extension in Ihe services was contingent upon improvement in the Department’s coal supplies.—A vole of thanks was accorded the Association. Railway Freights. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce asked support of the following resolutions:—That Ibis Chamber views with serious concern the proposal to materially increase railway freights, as it simply means increased taxation for the population .residing away from the seaports. The chairman thought it was a very good suggestion. Increased railway freights meant that the city firms had an unfair advantage for their mail order departments. The Government should do its utmost to open up the country, not to prevent such opening up. The resolution was strongly supported. Light Railways. Mr G. D. McLaren, Lower Kaimai, Tauranga, asked the Chamber’s support in the establishment of a light railway from Tauranga to Matamata, through the Kaimai.—-Resolved to send the Kaimai people all 'the information available regarding light railways. The Otorohanga Chamber of Com- , merce notified that it would support the Hamilton Chamber in its application to secure light railways for the Dominion.—To be asked to write to the Prime Minister. Approach to Bridge. Mr Sykes presented a sketch plan of suggested improvements to the eastern approach to the traffic bridge. It was a £IO,OOO scheme. Mr Gruar said that the matter of improving the approach had been before the Borough Council for at least three years. No scheme outlined to the Council had been so comprehensive as that suggested by Mr Sykes, which would do away with the great danger which now existed. ■Mr Sykes was 'thanked for ids plan, and asked to submit it to 'the Hamilton Borough Council. Another Traffic Bridge. The Waikato sub-provincial district of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union asked the Chamber to request the Borough Council to convene a pub'ic mee'ting to discuss 'the erection of a traffic bridge at No. 1, which it was considered most desirable should oc commenced as soon as possible. Mr Joll said the farmers of Waikato were unanimous in the opinion that such a bridge was absolutely necessary. It was resolved to ask the Borough Council to convene a public meeting. General. The Borough Council notified that the matter of forming a hydro-electric power district had been referred to the Electrical Committee. —Received. The Hamilton Borough Council wrote that an invitation to visit Hamilton was being forwarded to Viscount .iellicoe. —Received. The Ohakune- Chamber of Commerce wrote that it .was considered advisable for the deputation (on which Mr J. A. Young, M.P., will represent the Chamber) to wait on the Minister of Tourist Resorts regarding the Tongario National Park as soon as the session commenced.—Received.
