DISTRICT NEWS

TE KOWHAi. Farmers’ Club Meeting. A well attended meeting of the Farmers’ Club was held in the Club-room, on Wednesday evening, to consider matters in connection with the Road Board’s £20,000 loan. The discussion at times became fairly spirited, and although all present were in favour of a loan being raised, exception was taken to the fact that no scheme of allocation was put before the ratepayers. A deputation consisting of Messrs S. Fullerton, A. H. Crawford, T. Nicol and W. Wallace was appointed to wait upon the Road Board to try and put the matter on a more satisfactory basis. Progressive Euchre. The Te Kowhai Ladies’ Club celebrated their anniversary by a Progressive Euchre Tournament. This was the first function of the kind ever held in the district and was a huge success, sixteen full tables taking part, while many onlookers were present. The lady’s prize was won by Mrs N. Cotter, and the gentleman’s by Mr C. 'Corboy. The “booby” prizes were awarded to Miss V. Marwood and Mr F. Magner. Mrs R. H. Nicholson, the President of the Club, presented the prizes, and hearty cheers were given for Air R. Gillespie for his assistance in conducting operations, for other gentlemen who assisted, and for the ladies who organised the tournament. The hall was then cleared and dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Mesdames Margetts, Cotter, Matheis, Miss Nicholson, and Messrs Jones, Forsman and Gillespie. TANIWHA. Football. A very interesting match look place on Saturday between Ohinwai and Waerenga resulting in a win for, Waerenga by 6 points (two penalty goals) to 3 (a try). This makes three wins for Waerenga, leaving them so far unbeaten in the competition. Tanlwha Hall Fund. A progressive euchre party is to take place at Taniwha in aid of the fund. There is also a gift auction in view for the fund, which is goin- ahead well, and the committee hope see the hall erected in the near fu'ure. The chairman of the committee (Mr O. Armstrong), who has just returned from seven weeks’ holiday, should he in good form to make things hum. Schools. Things here in regard to schools are not much of a credit to those in command, Waeranga suffering in particular. The young children of this school have their classes in the Waerenga hall, which is an unlined building and about 70ft. by 2Gft. One need not say much to emphasise what these little mites suffer in such a place, sheltered by trees, so that it gets no sun these frosty mornings. Amusements.

The bachelors of the district gave a return ball to the ladies. There was a good attendance and everything went with the usual swing, making a most enjoyable evening. MATfIIVIATA. Tennis Club. A special general meeting of the tennis club was held on Monday evening for the purpose of receiving the balance sheet, prior to the secretary’s .(Mr M. McDermott) departure from the district. The, balance sheet showed a credit of £5 9s 2d, and a hearty vote of thanks was proposed lo the secretary. Mr Hookey was appointed secretary pro tern, and several new members were elected. Red Cross League, A meeting of the members of the League was held recently,'when the following ladies were present:—Mesdames’ Moore-James (in the chair), Fagan, Simpson, Mateer, Sutherland, Mogford, J. T. Vosper, C. D. Rollett, Bosson, W. S. Wilson, Cranswick, Gould, Bell, and Miss Sargeant. Before proceeding with the business a motion of sympathy with Mrs Kelso and family in their late sad bereavement was passed, the ladies standing. It was decided to re-name the League "The Ladies’ War Memorial League Committee,” and the following officers were appointed; President, Mrs Moore-Jones; secretary and treasurer, Mrs G. G. Bell; committee, vail ladies present, with the addition of Mesdarnes Kusabs anil Darby and Miss Robinson, with power to add to their number. It was resolved to allow the moneys in bank to the credit of the Red Dross League to remain for a further three months, and a fresh •accountwill be opened in the name of the new League. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Sargeant, the retiring secretary, for her untiring services during the past 2i years and a vote of thanks to the chair.

The Matarnala Red Cross League, having ceased operations under that name, Miss Sergeant, who has been secretary for the past two and a Mlf years, has relinquished the secretarial post. Residents will ho in hearty accord with the motion of thanks passed to that lady by the members at their last meeting. Miss Sargcanl carried out the duties in a whole-hearted and efficient manner, showing herself to he well fitted for the post. Valedictory.

The members of the Malamala Tennis club and friends, which included many prominent townspeople, assembled in the Town Hall, on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of attending a farewell to Mr M. McDermott, the late secretary, who is shortly leaving, to go into business at Putaruru. There was a large attendance, and the function proved to :be most enthusiastic and enjoyable. The evening was mostly devoted to dancing, for which splendid music Was played by Mr \v.

T. Darby’s orchestra, but several good local items wore interspersed, those contributing being .Miss .Myra Koss and Mr A. G. Yardley, Messrs F. Connell, B. Blennerhassett and M. Stubbings wore M’s.C. A nice supper was provided by the ladies’ committee, thus everything was in order for a function fitting the guest of the evening. Before supper Mr J. Price, vice-president of the Tennis Club, was called upon to make a presentation of a solid leather suit-case to Mr McDermott. The residents of Taihoa (Mangawhere) tendered a farewell evening lo Mr Joseph Robinson and his family in the hall on Tuesday last. The attendance was exceptionally large, the settlers having sent invitations fo friends in other parts of the district. The hall was nicely decorated, and a warm atmosphere was thus created. The evening was mostly devoted lo dancing, but several good items were rendered by Mr Barnett, “Tire Bing Boys” quartette, and Mr Yardley. The dance music was played by Mr Darby’s orchestra in its usual finished manner. The function was finished off with a splendid supper, of which the most appreciated article of diet was the Taihoa cream puffs, noted throughout the district. The evening could not have been a greater success, and was a fitting farewell to a popular family. Mr J. Price, called upon to make presentations to the guests, made eulogistic reference to the work done by them in the interest of the district, which he said had been filled in with a keen desire to make their farm a credit to the district. He handed Mr Robinson a case of pipes, and .Miss Robinson a large case of silver fish knives and forks. The guests were then accorded musical honours, and were the recipients of the best wishes from all present. A most enjoyable evening concluded with the singing of “Auid Lang Syne.”
