THE SEASON’S PROSPECTS,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. The prospects for frozen meat storage during the next season was discussed to-day by Mr D. Long,, secretary of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company. The latest information that they had on the subject of shipping space, Mr Long pointed out, was contained in a Press Association, telegram on Tuesday last, in which it was stated' that the Minister had been informed by the Australian Tonnage Committee, that “It is working to meet the request contained in a cable from the Wellington Tonnage Committee, namely to reduce the quantity of meat in store in-New Zealand by December Ist, to approximately 108,000 tons.” . ~, j Estimating 108,000 tons as being equal to 4,000,000 sixty pound carcases, on December 1 there would be in store in New Zealand 4,000,000 carcases. Assuming that the total storage available in Now Zealand was 8,000,000 car 1 cases it would appear that the season would commence with 4,000,000 carcases already in store, leaving space for only another 4,000,000 carcases Mr' Long pointed out that the killings for a season would Ire something between 6,000,000 and 7,000,000 carcases. It was therefore not difficult to see that the prospects for the season were not altogether happy. Everything would depend on the shipping space available, however, and some precise information on this point was being sought from the Government. It was remarked by Mr S. >J. Ambury, managing director of the Freezing Company, that the shortage of food with which America and Europe were threatened would seem to make it essential that adequate shipping be provided for carrying away New Zealand’s surplus products. It is to be noted that at present the Shaw. S,avill, and Albion liner Mahia has just completed loading 100,000 carcases at Auckland, and is sailing tomorrow for Whangarei to load another 20,000 carcases.
